 Production

Michael Noonan was an Australian writer living in England, where he'd gone in 1957 under a contract with Associated British. He told Albert Moran in an oral history that he was asked if the flying doctors would make a good series. Noonan said says and did up a Bible for a show with two scripts (they are available in Noonan's papers at UQ).

The series was announced in Feb 1958. It was the first TV series made by ABPC.

Noonan interview mentions it here.

Phil Levene wrote a lot of episodes see here.

Noonan says while making the series Associated British were taken over by Warner Bros who "chucked out" the scripts. But Noonan was kept on. Noonan had commissioned his old radio mates like Richard Lane and John Ford to do story outlines but they didn't end up writing scripts. Noonan ended up writing 17 of 39 scripts.

He says Dick Bentley was going to play the pilot but "he got the push". Alan White stayed. He says Richard Denning was not "a bad sort of bloke" but Noonan almost got into a punch up with him.

The series was filmed at Elstree studios in London with location work done in Australia.

In March 1958 two executives from Associated British, director David MacDonald and producer Hamilton Inglis, arrived in Australia to shoot footage. They said Michael Noonan would supervise the scripts and filming of at least 39 episodes would begin in a few weeks. They also said over 200 actors had been seen for the lead three roles.

Noonan reported he had written the first season of 13 episodes and that the second season of 13 episodes had been completed by English writers or Australian writers living in England.

Noonan says David MacDonald stayed on the production but the first producer Hamilton Inglis "got the boot...They sacked everyone left right and centre."

He recalls location filming Broken Hill, Silverwood, Wilcannia, Lake Eyre. They had 30 storylines written and shot footage with doubles to match that. For the other nine episodes they had a list of location shots which they could put in the story.  "It was a challenge but a lot of fun," said Noonan. "A lot of arguments"

Noonan says the old doctor was originally a genial old guy but the Americans made him blind old man to be like Barrymore in Kildare .

Denning arrived in June 1958.

Background footage was shot in Australia in July 1958.

In Feb 1959 it was announced Gross Krazne would be representing the American end. This is the team ofJack Goss and Phil Krazne who made TV series.

Noonan said Guy Thayer worked on it but was sacked. However Thayer later approached Noonan to do Riptide.

30 July 1959 report that shooting last episode that week see here.

In late 1959 the cost was given as between 300,000 and 500,000 pounds.

 Radio series

The show was adapted into a BBC radio series of the same name. This starred Bill Kerr, James Mackechnie, and Bettina Dickson.  Rex Rienits wrote for it. Noonan told Albert Moran he suggested some stories for it and emphasised the TV series came first.  But did it?

Started July 1958 see here.  10 March 1959 announced new series of it. See here.

Novels

Noonan adapted several of his stories into six novels. The Flying Doctor (1961), The Flying Doctor on the Great Barrier Reef (1962),

Noonan says the Americans took out the School of the Air element but he put it in the novels.

Broadcast

It was shown on ABC Weekend Television. Noonan said it was sold internationally but never taken up by a US network. He says Rupert Murdoch offered a thousand pounds for the series but it was turned down.

It started playing on CBC on 2 Oct 1959.

It started showing in Sydney on 10 April 1965 on Channel Ten. It started showing in Melbourne on ATV-0 in January 1966.
