Original play
It was based on a play by Guido Cantini. Victor Rietti translated it into English.
Other adaptations
The play was adapted for Australian radio in 1955.
It was adapted by the BBC in 1952 as The Wanderer, with Rietti in the lead. A review is here. The BBC adapted it for radio as well the same year.
Production
It was recorded in Melbourne. Chris Muir directed. It was announced in August 1960.
William Fitzwater, a floor manager, wrote the violin theme.
I wonder why they decided to film it? Good role for Don Crosby? Maybe because Robert Rietti would bitch his plays.
It showed in Sydney on 9 November.
Reception
The Sydney Morning Herald thought that the production "lacked the sheer relish in character-drawing and good humoured gusto that would have made it more than a rather laboured dissection of cupidity."
The Listener In thought the director and cast lost interest "half way through" and felt it was a poor choice of play.
