Journey's End (proposed 13 Nov 1957) (never broadcast)

 A fascinating "what happened"?

The ABC were going to film RC Sheriff's masterpiece. There were newspaper reports of filming at Holesworthy army base in October 1957 with screening to be in November. Then.... nothing.

What happened?

The play is so good. Ray Menmuir was going to direct. He's one of the best directors.

Cast

Original play

The play premiered in 1928 in England. It was a bit hit there and in New York and was turned into a 1930 film.  Borrow it here.

Other versions

The BBC filmed it for TV in 1937, 1954 and 1960 (with Richard Johnson).

The BBC did it on radio in 1929, 1947 and 1970.

Production

It was going to be shot in Sydney.  There was location filming in October 1957 at Holsworthy military camp.

The play had been performed on (commercial) Australian radio in 1954 with John Ewart.

It had to be abandoned when they didn't get rights.
