The key phrase:
Local drama at the time didn't pay. They tried it at ATN-7 they tried it at GTV-9 in Melbourne. But I knew it wouldn't work because we didn't have any personalities at that stage and you couldn't get sponsors without personalities. Australian radio drama was drawing good audiences at the time but you didn't see radio actors (and some of those actors were old and wobbly-looking types). I wish it had worked for TV but it didn't. We also would have liked to do more comedy, but there weren't the comedians. Some of the best were very old by the time we got to them. George Wallace Snr for example who'd been in his prime 20 years earlier.
It is remarkable how such a champion of Australian drama at feature film level was so unenthusiastic about it when he ran a TV station. Especially as in Hall's day the networks had great success with Homicide, Mavis and McGooley. Homicide didn't need stars. Gordon Chater was a star. So too John Meillon.
