The Caine Mutiny (11 Jan 1959)

1959 Australian TV play based on The Caine Mutiny Court Martial broadcast by Melbourne's Channel 7. It was the first commercial TV channel in Australia to present a full-length live drama and was broadcast on January 11, 1959 over two hours. 

It was the first live TV drama in Australia to not come from the ABC studios. A copy of this exists at the National Film and Sound Archive.

Original play

The play by Herman Wouk debuted on Broadway in 1954, a successful production directed by Charles Laughton. It was adapted from Wouk's 1951 novel... which was filmed in 1954. The novel was a best seller and the movie a big hit.

Other adaptations

The world premiere radio adaptation of the play was held in Melbourne by the General Motors Hour in 1958. This production was well received.

A stage version premiered at Melbourne Little Theatre in August 1958. It ran for 3 1/2 weeks.

Production

Peter Randall produced and the cast had performed the play for three weeks at the Little Theatre in South Yarra.

Dorothy Crawford produced . Tony Doogood, HSV 7 director, directed.

Reception

The Australian Woman's Weekly said "congratulations to all involved." 

The Age called it "a triumph".

George Fairfax's performance won him an "Erik" award. (Not sure what is.)

The ratings went up to a 53% share.

Repeat

It was repeated on HSV-7 in 22 Feb 1959.

Radio 

The production was simulcast on radio on 11 January 1959 on 3DB..
