Summer of the Seventeenth Doll (29 Oct 1964) BBC

British TV pay based on the classic Australian play. The cast for this version is so strong I'm surprised this version is not better known. Was it bad? I can't imagine them stuffing it up.

Cast

Ewen Solon as Barney Ibbot
Grant Taylor as Ron Webber
Madge Ryan as Pearl Cunningham
Sheila Hancock as Olive Leech
Lyn Ashley as Bubba Ryan
Hazel Coppen as Emma Leech
George Roubicek as Johnny Dowd
Anthony Coburn     as Taxi driver
Valentine Ashley as Newspaper Boy

Play

The play was the block buster theatrical success of the 1950s for Australia.

Other adaptations

It was filmed by Hollywood studio HHL in 1959 (with key British talent).

It was never adapted for Australian TV until filmed in the late 1970s. I assume the rights were tied up... but maybe they didn't ask.

It was filmed for Canadian TV in 1965.

Production

Produced by  Cedric Messina. Directed by Mary Ridge, making her debut as director

Production Design by  Eileen Diss. Camera and Electrical Department by Robert Wright. Script editor Rosemary Hill.

I think a copy is at the BFI.
